BrickFair 2008 is happening this Labor Day weekend in Tysons Corner Virginia, just outside Washington DC. BrickFair is a LEGO festival for AFOLs, open to public viewing, but only attendees are invited to play, challenge, vote and participate at every event. Check the web-site for detail on location and admission.
See pictures from BrickFair.
From what I can tell from the pictures, it looks like the hotel has replaced the lights in the ballroom & made it brighter -- that's great because it was hard to see in the ballroom back in 2006. :)

Rock Raiders II
So I just read over on Eurobricks that Rock Raiders is making a come-back in 2009, but the new name is "Power Miners." The quote is, "Power Miners features a team of miners that dig into the Earth’s crust and encounter half-rock/half-crystal monsters. The range features collectible vehicles and mini-figures and monsters."
With the new molding process of mixing plastics, the half-rock/half-crystal monsters should look cool. And hopefully new colored power crystals.
Now, I like the Rock Raider line, so this isn't a bad thing. I thought it was a well thought out concept, but it needed to be developed more when it came to producing sets... more rock wall play-sets, maybe new parts to inspire underground cities or lost civilizations, or something that eluded to a rock-monster city -- I really do like the rock monster from the line.
Anyway, this gives me new hope for the return of "Time Twisters", "Time Cruisers" and the return of Timmy!

Google LEGO (clone) Calendar
Now this is interesting... not LEGO, but a clone brand. With all the commotion over the #4999 Wind Turbine Vestas promo set, if LEGO ever got into the market of making "marketing sets" like this for big companies, it would drive LEGO collectors mad with murderous glee.
I personally think this calendar looks cool... I'd buy one, even if it isn't LEGO. And here's another type of clone brand calendar. Found on darkroastedblend.com. BTW, just checked eBay, there's none listed at this time.
Update: You can buy your own clone brand calendar here.

Pirates...
It seems like everyone is excited by the prospect of pirates returning in 2009. But if you can't wait until then, check out the Classic Pirates Flickr group for inspiration.

HKLUG's Olympic Display
When I first saw this a few weeks ago, I was completely blown away... the level of detail & the amount of work (and bricks) that went into HKLUG's Olympic Display is... well... just.. Olympic! On the same scale as the Olympic opening ceremonies in Beijing. If you get a few moments, click around... Dunechaser has uploaded some pre-show, set-up pictures courtesy Chiukeung and HKLUG.

LEGO Puppetry
So here's the next evolution in LEGO MOCs, LEGO puppetry. It's such a cool idea that I'm wondering why it never came up before... very simple in it's construction. And it would be a cool construction project with kids -- build your own LEGO puppet, then have a puppet show... It does have a 'craft' element to it if you use fishing line, but that's something easy to thread through a Technic brick, without damaging bricks... I applaud Matt Armstrong (Monstrbrick) for this cool idea!
